is there any possibility to change how external links are created? It would be nice if they opened in a new tab instead of the current one.

Sorry, no can do... the most recent web standards don't know anything about links opening in new windows (ie. the target attribute). It was originally intended to be used with frames only, but since frames are a no no these days that attribute was removed from XHTML specs.
